ACCT Philly’s Working Cat Adoption Program offers a second chance for cats who thrive best outside of a traditional home environment. These independent-minded felines may not be suited for life as lap cats, but they make excellent teammates in unique settings!

Our program goes beyond the typical “barn cat” placement — we match cats with all kinds of non-traditional homes where they can live comfortably and have a purpose. That might be a farm, barn, warehouse, workshop, brewery, garden center, factory, church, artist studio, or even an office.

Often, these cats naturally help control rodent populations while enjoying the freedom and space they prefer. It’s a win-win partnership — a safe, fulfilling life for the cat, and a helpful, low-maintenance companion for their new home.

ACCT Philly’s Working Cat Adoption Program was created to help cats who don’t fit the mold of a traditional indoor pet find the homes that suit them best. Some of these cats are more independent or energetic, while others may not be fully socialized or comfortable living indoors full-time. Many are former outdoor or indoor/outdoor cats who simply need a different kind of home environment.

These cats still deserve safety, care, and a place to belong. Through this program, we connect them with non-traditional adopters who can offer safe, sheltered spaces and the independence they prefer. Many of these adopters are businesses that have facilities such as barns, breweries, libraries, stores or warehouses, and having a working cat benefits the business in many ways too:

• Nature’s pest control: Working cats are excellent at deterring rodents and other small pests. Even their scent and presence can keep mice and rats away — helping stores, libraries, warehouses, breweries and other shops maintain a clean, pest-free environment without the use of traps or chemicals. Fun fact: Disneyland employs 200 cats for pest control! We do want to note, while cats are great for pest control, they are not miracle workers so please don’t expect one cat to take on the raccoons in your Philadelphia yard!
• Add some charm to your store: A resident cat can quickly become part of a store’s charm (google Francine, library cats, just to name a few) Customers love seeing and interacting (even from a distance) with a friendly or independent “shop cat.” It adds personality to the space, creates conversation, and can even draw regulars back just to say hi.
• Giving back: By adopting a working cat, a store gives a second chance to a cat who might otherwise struggle to find a home. It’s a meaningful, low-effort way to make a difference — and it shows customers that the business cares about animal welfare and community partnerships.

Adopting a working cat means giving an independent cat a safe place to call home — and committing to their lifelong care. As their caregiver, you’ll provide the essentials: shelter, food, fresh water, and ongoing veterinary care to keep them healthy and happy.

When a working cat first arrives, they’ll spend about two weeks in an extra-large crate or enclosed space on your property. This short acclimation period helps them safely adjust and learn that their new home is where food, comfort, and security come from. After that, they’re ready to explore and settle into their new surroundings.

All working cats come spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. They’ll need occasional vet visits — just like any other pet. In return, they offer companionship, personality, and a unique presence that makes every space feel more alive.

Adopting a working cat is simple — and we’re here to help every step of the way! To get started, just fill out a Working Cat Adoption Questionnaire and provide proof of residency, along with landlord contact information if you rent your property.

Once you’re approved, our team will work with you to find the perfect cats for your space and answer any questions you have. If you already have a secure area or crate for their acclimation period, that’s great — but don’t worry if not! ACCT Philly can lend you one to make the transition smooth and stress-free.

You’re welcome to pick up your new feline team members from the shelter, and in some cases, we may be able to help with transportation and setup. Our goal is to make sure both you and your new working cats are set up for success from day one.
